Our Conventual Church
The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, Knights Hospitaller, is an ecumenical Christian Order devoted to charitable works in service of the sick, the poor, and the disadvantaged, and to fostering unity among all followers of Christ. Faith has guided the Order since its earliest foundations in Jerusalem, and the spiritual life of our members remains central to our vocation.
For centuries, the Conventual Church has held a special place in the life of the Order. It is a sacred space where Sisters and Brothers gather to worship, to reflect upon the Word of God, and to draw inspiration from the teachings of our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. Through prayer, study, and fellowship, we seek God’s guidance in continuing the Hospitaller mission entrusted to us.
Our membership is richly diverse, reflecting the universal nature of the Christian faith. Our Knights and Dames come from many traditions: from the ancient rites of Roman Catholicism, including those formed through the Latin Mass, to the broad spectrum of Anglican, Orthodox, and Protestant communities, as well as contemporary evangelical churches. United in Christ, we stand together as one Order, bound by our commitment to service, charity, and faith.
We warmly welcome all Christians to join us in worship. Our regular services and ceremonial observances provide opportunities to praise the Lord, strengthen our spiritual purpose, and receive new Soldiers of Christ into the Order through solemn Investiture and devotional rites.
In New South Wales, the Order holds its major religious observances and Investiture ceremonies at the historic St James’ Church, King Street, in the heart of the Sydney CBD—one of Australia’s oldest and most significant Anglican churches. This sacred setting reflects both the dignity of our heritage and the enduring Christian values upon which the Order is founded.
